Learn about materials science and engineering at this free, week-long camp that features team-based, intensive problem-solving science experiences that are a unique blend of education and experimentation.

Materials are the building blocks of civilizations, while advancements in technology are dependent on the available materials. Since materials science touches every aspect of engineering design, the study of materials provides opportunities for students to learn science and math in the context of diverse, real-world applications.

The field of materials science and engineering offers career opportunities as boundless as the imagination, in just about every industry. This camp is for highly motivated students with an aptitude for math and science. Under the supervision of engineering experts, campers will learn how to safely use state-of-the-art research equipment and processes, including electron microscopy, heat treating, tensile testing of metals, synthesis of slime and foam polymers, composites, and liquid crystal thermometers.

Materials Science is a hub discipline, having strong connections with other disciplines that rely on materials including chemistry, biology, archeology, economics, and physics. Experts in these fields collaborate with materials scientists and engineers to understand the role of materials in their work.

Campers will learn about materials science using a range of professional equipment and skills through team-based, intensive problem-solving science experiences. This camp is designed with a series of short lectures together with hands-on, interactive laboratory sessions and demonstrations; a truly unique, team-based problem-solving experience that explores materials science and engineering principles. S&T is proud to offer an amazing summer camp experience that is interesting, fun, relevant, and educational.

Materials science is an interdisciplinary approach to science that brings together tools in science, technology, and mathematics to solve societal critical needs. Camp attendees will network with professionals, and explore college, and career options with faculty, staff, and current S&T students throughout their time on campus.

Camp Activities:

  •         Solve technical problems. Students work in small groups to investigate various aspects and applications of engineering metals and ceramics.
  •         Explore several materials-related industries.
  •         Attend guest presentations.
  •         Participate in group projects, including design-build contests.
  •         Daily activity challenges related to various areas of materials science (materials provided)

Participants are responsible for their own transportation to and from Missouri University of Science and Technology in Rolla, Missouri. USA Express provides shuttle service from St. Louis Lambert Airport to Rolla. You can contact USA Express by calling 1-800-872-9399 or visiting their website at https://www.usaxonline.com/.
